The United Nations Economic and Social
Council (ECOSOC) is one of the principal organs of the UN and has 54 members
which are elected by the General Assembly. The ECOSOC coordinates all the
economic, social, and other related aspects of all the UN specialized agencies,
functional commissions and regional commissions.
It serves as the central forum for the
discussion of social and economic issues, formulating policy recommendations
for Member States and the UN, and is responsible for the following:
- · promoting higher standards of living, full employment, and economic and social progress
- · identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems
- · facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation
- · encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
In exercising its authority, ECOSOC
consults with academics, business sector representatives, and more that 3200
registered non-governmental organisations. The Council meets once every year
for a four week session in July, alternating between New York and Geneva.
